Introduction

The Canvas Parent app is a useful tool to help parents keep tabs of student activity and progress in Canvas but does not provide the depth and clarity that parents might be expecting.

We recommend Parents/Guardians use the Canvas Web Browser. The Parent app does not provide 100% functional parity when compared to the Canvas web interface.

We suggest using the Canvas web interface which provides more detail but files may still be restricted by the instructor.

Parents can create an Observer account or log into Canvas by visiting this URL https://pascack.instructure.com/login/canvas.

For specifics regarding the various modes, please see the Canvas Parent Mobile Features resource.

Access Limitations

The parent app provides a glimpse of when assignments are due and the basic understanding of assignments but parents may not be able to see all assignment details, such as attachments shared through Google.  Permissions to those files are typically restricted by instructors only to those with a Pascack.org account.

For example, when clicking a link to an assignment or file, a parent may be prompted to request access to a file as shown in the images below. This is because the file being linked to is restricted to those with a Pascack.org and is not a limitation of the app itself.

Parents needing access to the file can request access or contact the instructor directly. Requesting access does not necessarily mean that access will be granted.

Links within the Canvas app notifications may lead to a page asking the user to sign in to PVRHSD as shown in the image below. This is a secure login that only authenticates users with a Pascack.org account. Those without a school account, such a parent observers, will not be able to open the link.
