There are essentially three steps to using Grade Passback (GPB)
- Sync Canvas Assignment Groups with Genesis Categories
- Select assignments for pass-back to Genesis
- Manually-sync or auto-sync grades
Links to the official Canvas instructions are at the bottom of this document. Troubleshooting tips based on teacher feedback is also included. Scroll down to check them out!
Sync Canvas Assignment Groups with Genesis Categories
Before using GPB, you must ensure that your Canvas assignment group names match the grading categories in your Genesis gradebook. This is the first step and must be done for GPB to work! Once this first step is performed, you shouldn't need to do it again unless there are changes on one side or the other.
This video gives you an idea of how this works. While the SIS used in the video is not Genesis, the process is the same.
Select assignments for pass-back to Genesis
After you have synced your Canvas assignment groups to the Genesis grading categories as shown above, you'll need to select the assignments you want to sync. This can be done after-the-fact or while an assignment is being created.
manually-sync or auto-sync grades
After selecting the Canvas assignments you want to sync to Genesis, you can choose to manually-sync or auto-sync. Here's how.
If you do not see the Grade Sync menu item, you need to go to Settings / Navigation and drag it up from the Disabled/Hidden area to the Enabled/Viewable area. Scroll down to Troubleshooting for details.

Grade Sync Errors:
Click on the link to learn more about what went wrong. In this case, some assignments were not 'sunk' because the categories were not matched from step one, or there is a problem with the assignment - like no due date was set. These types of issues will produce errors but each error has instructions on how to fix it.
No Grade Sync Menu Item:
If you do not see the Grade Sync menu item in your Canvas course, you will need to enable it to make it visible.
Go to the course settings, then Navigation tab. Drag the Grade Sync item from the Disabled / Hidden section up into the Enabled / Visible section and click Save. You should now see the Grade Sync menu in your course.
Can't Enable Grade Sync from Settings / Feature Options:
This is "non-turnonable" by design. It is a setting used for other SIS products, not Genesis so this should be heartily ignored. Grade Passback is enabled for us as a service and will work assuming you have matched categories (step 1) and selected the assignment to sync. The setting shown below does not pertain to us.
