There are essentially three steps to using Grade Passback (GPB) top
- Sync Canvas Assignment Groups with Genesis Categories
- Select assignments for pass-back to Genesis
- Manually-sync or auto-sync grades

Before using GPB, you must ensure that your Canvas assignment group names are synced to the desired grading categories in your Genesis gradebook.
You may want to set up Canvas Assignment Groups that exactly match the name of the grading categories in Genesis but you don't have to. Some teachers do this, some do not.
However you decide to proceed, the main point it that the Canvas gradebook is synced to the Genesis gradebook.

To recap, this first step must be done for GPB to work! Once this first step is performed, you shouldn't need to do it again unless there are changes on one side or the other.
Here is how to do it!

The image below is an example of how a teacher set this up. As you see, the Canvas category "Homework" is sync'd to the SIS Category "Homework". You can see at a glance all of the areas that have been synchronized or "Associated" with the green check mark.

This video gives you another example of how this works. While the SIS used is not Genesis, the process is the same.
Select assignments for pass-back to Genesis
After you have synced your Canvas assignment groups to the Genesis grading categories as shown above, you'll need to select the assignments you want to sync.
This selection can be done after-the-fact or while an assignment is being created. Click on the check box to indicate if you want the assignment's grate to pass back to Genesis.

Note: Assignments must have a numeric score and due date to sync correctly.
manually-sync or auto-sync grades
After selecting the Canvas assignments you want to sync to Genesis, you can choose to manually-sync or auto-sync. Most teachers are doing this manually as there is more control over the process.
Here's how.

Or, from Grades, it may look like this...

Tip: All assignments that had the checkbox previously selected are show by default to sync. You would need to uncheck assignments that you do not want to sync.
When ready, click the Post Grades (for X assignments) button .

If you do not see the Grade Sync menu item, you need to go to Settings / Navigation and drag it up from the Disabled/Hidden area to the Enabled/Viewable area. Scroll down to Troubleshooting for details.

Grade Sync Errors:
Click on the link to learn more about what went wrong. In this case, some assignments were not 'sunk' because the categories were not matched from step one, or there is a problem with the assignment - like no due date was set. These types of issues will produce errors but each error has instructions on how to fix it.

No Grade Sync Menu Item:
If you do not see the Grade Sync menu item in your Canvas course, you will need to enable it to make it visible.
Go to the course settings, then Navigation tab. Drag the Grade Sync item from the Disabled / Hidden section up into the Enabled / Visible section and click Save. You should now see the Grade Sync menu in your course.

Can't Enable Grade Sync from Settings / Feature Options:
This is "non-turn-onable" by design. It is a setting used for other SIS products, not Genesis so this should be heartily ignored. Grade Passback is enabled for us as a service and will work assuming you have matched categories (step 1) and selected the assignment to sync. The setting shown below does not pertain to us.

Feedback from Teacher usage:
- Assignments that are differentiated somehow, like extra time for different individuals or groups, will not sync.
- If an assignment was previously synchronized and there is a late grade entered at a later time, or there is a grade change for some reason, you may click the "Remaster Grade Passback" button which will update the grade to the latest status. This option is found in the Utilities tab from the Grade Sync menu.
